Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan has withdrawn from the upcoming season of the Big Bash League (BBL), set to commence on December 7, due to a back injury. Rashid, who played a crucial role in Afghanistan’s successful World Cup campaign, will not be part of the Adelaide Strikers squad. Although the team has not immediately announced a replacement for the star all-rounder, they are expected to do so in the near future. Rashid, having participated in all nine matches of Afghanistan’s historic World Cup journey, is likely to undergo surgery for his back injury.
Tim Nielsen, the Strikers General Manager of Cricket, expressed the team’s disappointment at losing Rashid for the season. He stated, “Rashid is a beloved member of the Strikers and a fan favorite who has been with us for seven years, so he will be extremely missed this summer.”
Nielsen acknowledged Rashid’s love for Adelaide and the Strikers, expressing support for the player as he undergoes treatment for his injury to ensure a prolonged engagement in the sport. Rashid has been an integral part of the Strikers’ squad since 2017.
Nielsen further mentioned, “Our list management and coaching staff will now look at our options for replacing Rashid for the upcoming season, and a replacement player will be announced in due course.”
Despite Rashid’s absence, the Adelaide Strikers will retain retention rights for him in future BBL seasons. It’s worth noting that Rashid had previously considered withdrawing from the BBL in protest of Australia canceling the ODI series against Afghanistan.
In addition to Rashid, the Strikers will also be without the services of England batter Harry Brook in the upcoming BBL edition. Following a fourth-place finish in the last BBL season, the Strikers are aiming for an improved performance. Their campaign kicks off against the Brisbane Heat on December 9.
