The entire Bengaluru Metro’s Purple Line, also known as the Whitefield-Challaghatta Metro corridor, is set to become fully operational on Monday, October 9, without an official inauguration ceremony. This decision was communicated by Bangalore Central MP, PC Mohan, in a post on X.
According to PC Mohan’s announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) to start providing services on the new stretches of the Purple Line without waiting for a formal inauguration with VIP guests.
The newly opened sections, including the 2.1-km Baiyappanahalli-KR Pura and the 2.05-km Kengeri-Challaghatta segments, will be accessible to the public starting at 5 am. These sections are part of the Purple Line, which stretches from Whitefield in the east to Challaghatta in the west, covering a total distance of 42.85 km.
The decision to forgo a formal inauguration ceremony is seen as a move to eliminate VIP culture and prioritize public interest. It was emphasized that Prime Minister Modi has made significant contributions to Bengaluru’s development, including approvals for the Suburban Rail, the construction of the STRR (Satellite Town Ring Road), expansion of Namma Metro Phase 2A and 2B, introduction of electric buses under the FAME-II scheme, and the expansion of Kempegowda International Airport with a new terminal (T2). All these infrastructure projects are expected to improve transportation and the quality of life for Bengaluru residents.
To mark the opening of the new stretch of Namma Metro’s Purple Line, three MPs representing Bengaluru—DV Sadananda Gowda, PC Mohan, and Tejasvi Surya—expressed their gratitude to PM Narendra Modi for his invaluable contributions to the city’s development and continuous support for Bengaluru.
