Scriptures talk about the connection with religion.
Chhath Puja 2023 Vrat Katha: Since Vedic times, humans have worshipped everything that has had a positive impact on their lives and brought them daily benefits, whether it be a river, tree, mountain, the moon, or the sun. All these have always been symbols of human faith and remain venerable. From Vedic times, Aryans considered the sun as the soul of the universe. Even today, there is no doubt that without the sun, life on Earth would be unimaginable. Therefore, it is not an exaggeration to say that the worship of the sun has been prevalent in India since Vedic times.
Chhath Puja 2023 Katha: The worship of the sun is discussed in the Bhagavat Purana, Vishnu Purana, and Brahmavaivarta Purana. Chhath Puja has been observed since approximately the medieval period, but its popularity has grown rapidly in the last two decades. Although Chhath is one of many festivals among Hindus, it is deeply connected to faith. Interestingly, some people from the Muslim community also celebrate Chhath with great devotion, enhancing the festival’s significance.
Chhath Mata Ki Katha: There are many folk stories behind the celebration of Chhath Puja, with the most popular one being associated with the Mahabharata. It is said that when the Pandavas lost their entire kingdom in a game of dice, Draupadi observed this fast. Consequently, her wish was fulfilled, and the Pandavas regained their kingdom.
Chhathi Maiya Ki Kahani: Another story is related to the Ramayana. It is said that after Ravana’s defeat and the return to Ayodhya, on the day of establishing the Ram Rajya, Lord Rama and Sita worshipped the sun god and observed a fast on the Kartik Shukla Paksha Shashthi. Since then, the tradition of celebrating Chhath Puja began.
