In Dubai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in discussions with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Friday, on the sidelines of the COP28 Summit. He expressed optimism about collaborative efforts between India and Italy aimed at fostering a sustainable and prosperous future. PM Modi shared this development on ‘X,’ stating, “Met PM @GiorgiaMeloni of Italy on the sidelines of the #COP28 Summit. Looking forward to collaborative efforts between India and Italy for a sustainable and prosperous future.”
Meloni, in turn, shared a selfie with PM Modi on her Twitter handle, which has gained widespread attention. This meeting follows a bilateral discussion between PM Modi and Meloni in September during the G20 Summit in New Delhi. During that meeting, PM Modi expressed gratitude for Italy’s support of India’s G20 Presidency and acknowledged Italy’s involvement in initiatives like the Global Biofuel Alliance and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.
Reflecting on the completion of 75 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations, the leaders took stock of the progress in various aspects of the India-Italy Strategic Partnership. They also expressed a mutual commitment to enhancing cooperation in areas such as defense and new and emerging technologies. Recognizing the importance of collaboration within the G7 and G20 frameworks for the greater global good, they discussed the need for concerted efforts.
During Friday’s interaction, PM Modi highlighted the substantial impact of climate change on countries in the Global South. He emphasized the essential role of climate finance and technology in fulfilling the aspirations of these nations. The World Climate Action Summit, part of the 28th Conference of Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), provided the backdrop for this meeting. This marks PM Modi’s third appearance at the World Climate Action Summit, following his participation in Paris in 2015 and Glasgow in 2021.
