A first-year student who tragically lost his life in what appears to be a suicide at Kolkata’s Jadavpur University was reportedly subjected to a distressing ragging ordeal on August 9th. The student was allegedly subjected to a harrowing episode lasting over two hours during which he was coerced into removing his clothes, as disclosed by a police official associated with the ongoing investigation. The student’s senior peers purportedly targeted him by asserting that he was gay and demanded proof to validate their claim, the officer further elaborated.
In a recent development, on August 16th, the Kolkata Police apprehended an additional six individuals in connection with the incident. With these latest arrests, the total number of detainees has risen to nine.
“Our apprehension of these six individuals stemmed from inconsistencies in their responses during our inquiry. Among them, three are former students, while the others are presently enrolled in the college. All were present within the hostel premises on the night of August 9th, when the incident involving the first-year student transpired,” shared a police representative.
