A rather unexpected and somewhat disconcerting incident unfolded in the Philippines when Maria Christina Cusi, preparing for lunch one day, stumbled upon a peculiar discovery in her kitchen. As she began to cook, she noticed a fish with teeth that bore an uncanny resemblance to human teeth, giving the impression of a grin or smile. The experience left her completely shocked and slightly alarmed.
Cusi had reportedly purchased a variety of fish, totaling approximately one kilogram, from one of Bacolod City’s prominent markets. Upon returning home and starting to clean the fish for cooking, she was taken aback when she noticed the startling similarity between the fish’s teeth and those of a human. After contemplating the unusual creature for some time, Cusi eventually decided to dispose of it out of concern that it might pose a health risk to her family.
Subsequent investigation revealed that the fish Cusi had purchased was a bighead carp, a freshwater species capable of growing up to 60 inches in length. Strangely, such human-like teeth sets, like the ones Cusi encountered, are uncommon in these fish, which are sometimes locally referred to as “Imelda” after the nation’s former First Lady.
This incident is not the first time a fish with teeth closely resembling those of a human has been discovered. In the past, various species within the South American Pacu family have gained notoriety for their remarkably human-like dental characteristics.
A particularly creepy find of a fish species with even more human-like teeth and lips went viral approximately three years ago, raising questions about the authenticity of the images. This peculiar fish was reportedly caught in Malaysia.
