The United States government has declared the release of $250 million in weapons and equipment for Ukraine, marking its final aid package for the year. Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the importance of swift action by Congress to bolster national security interests and assist Ukraine in defending itself against Russian aggression.
The aid package encompasses ammunition for artillery and air defense systems, anti-armor munitions, and over 15 million rounds of small arms ammunition. Notable weapons offered include Javelin anti-tank systems and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, as outlined in a press release from the Defense Department.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the United States has contributed approximately $44.3 billion in military assistance, according to the administration. Blinken underscored the critical role of U.S. assistance in supporting Ukraine’s defense of its country and freedom.
President Joe Biden’s efforts to secure additional funds for Ukraine faced opposition from Republican lawmakers before Congress adjourned for the holiday season. A proposed emergency spending measure of $50 billion for Ukraine and $14 billion for Israel was defeated in the Senate. Some lawmakers express support for aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan but call for tying legislation to border and immigration restrictions, given the escalating tensions at the U.S.-Mexico border.
The announcement of aid follows Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to the U.S., where he sought support from lawmakers without success. Despite warnings from Ukraine about the risk to its war effort and public finances, there is growing concern about a potential slowdown in aid from Washington and European allies.
