The Marvels debuted with a disappointing $110.3 million (approximately Rs. 918 crore) at the global box office during its opening weekend, marking the weakest start in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s history. The film’s underperformance is attributed to lackluster buzz and the inability of its leads, Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani, to promote the film or participate in interviews due to the recently concluded actors’ strike in Hollywood. Superhero movie fatigue and increased selectiveness among audiences also contributed to the subdued response. Despite initial hopes of a $75 million (about Rs. 624 crore) debut in the US and Canada, The Marvels only earned $47 million (about Rs. 391 crore) domestically. Internationally, it struggled with a total production budget of $200 million (about Rs. 1,664 crore), with China being a notable contributor. The film faced criticism for its cluttered storyline and underwent four weeks of reshoots, while director Nia DaCosta worked on another project during post-production. The Marvels opened on the same day as Netflix released David Fincher’s The Killer, potentially impacting its theatrical performance. The movie, a direct sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, explores a destabilized universe where Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan, and Captain Monica Rambeau’s powers become entwined as they unite to thwart the evil Kree imperialist Dar-Benn.
