During Rakshabandhan in Delhi, a disagreement arose within a household over the Shagun (auspicious gift), resulting in three sisters-in-law physically assaulting their sister-in-law. The incident occurred in the Maidangarhi area. The victim sustained significant injuries and had to be hospitalized. The accused sisters-in-law were demanding a Shagun of Rs 21,000.
A dispute erupted in a household during Rakshabandhan, a festival celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters, leading to the physical assault of a sister-in-law by her sisters-in-law. The incident unfolded in the jurisdiction of the Maidangarhi police station in Delhi, specifically regarding the Shagun (auspicious gift) exchanged on Rakhi. Allegedly, when the victim attempted to contact the police for assistance, other female relatives also participated in the assault. The situation escalated to the point where the woman required admission to AIIMS hospital for medical treatment.
The investigating police officer explained that a woman residing in the Maidangarhi area, employed as a nurse, was visited by her husband’s sisters on Raksha Bandhan to tie Rakhi to their brother. Initially, there was a disagreement over the Rakhi ceremony, which then extended to the sisters-in-law requesting Rs 21,000 each from their brother as Shagun. This dispute led to a physical altercation between the woman and her sisters-in-law. Subsequently, when the expected Shagun was not provided, the sisters-in-law resorted to assaulting their sister-in-law. According to reports, when the victim attempted to contact the police, other female relatives within the household also joined in the assault, necessitating the woman’s hospitalization for treatment.
It’s worth noting that Rakshabandhan was celebrated on two days, August 30th and 31st, in different parts of the country this year. On the same day, in Ghaziabad, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) employed his skills and diplomacy to prevent a girl from committing suicide, thereby saving her life.
