Confirming the appointment, BCB President Nazmul Hasan stated that Shakib Al Hasan will lead Bangladesh’s ODI cricket team during the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup tournaments. This decision follows the vacancy created by Tamim Iqbal’s resignation from captaincy on August 3. Nazmul revealed that the squad for both tournaments would be unveiled shortly and would consist of 17 members, with Shakib assuming the role of captain with immediate effect.
Previously, the BCB had been awaiting Shakib’s confirmation of availability before finalizing his appointment as captain. While there were reports suggesting his potential leadership across all formats until the World Cup, decisions regarding his long-term captaincy remain open for discussion.
Nazmul emphasized that discussions about Shakib’s sustained leadership across formats would be held after his return, considering his availability and preferences. Shakib’s dedication and seriousness towards cricket have notably increased over the past year, impressing the board.
Litton Das has been designated as the vice-captain and will step in to lead the team in Shakib’s absence. The BCB is reserving judgments about long-term leadership decisions, keeping future scenarios in mind.
Shakib Al Hasan, who currently serves as the Test and T20I captain, has previously led the ODI team, including during the 2011 World Cup. The BCB delayed announcing the squad due to uncertainty about the captaincy, awaiting consultation with the appointed leader. The squad for the tournaments is anticipated to be disclosed soon, with the selectors working in collaboration with the coach and captain to finalize the lineup.
