Nissan is set to invest over £1 billion in constructing two new electric models at its Sunderland plant, according to reports from Sky News and the Financial Times. The Japanese automaker is expected to announce on Friday that the electric versions of its Qashqai and Juke models will be produced at the northern England facility. Although no upfront taxpayer funds will be involved, the British government is anticipated to provide guarantees for the project. The investment is part of Nissan’s broader plan to build two new electric models, with the total investment exceeding £1 billion. Nissan had previously confirmed in September that one of the new electric vehicle models for Europe would be manufactured at the Sunderland plant. A spokesperson for Nissan in Japan declined to comment on the reports. The announcement is expected to be made by Nissan Chief Executive Makoto Uchida, with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak likely to visit the site on Friday.
