Prayagraj: The world’s largest annual religious fair, the Magh Mela, began today in Prayagraj, the city of faith, with the bathing festival on Makar Sankranti. Devotees are taking a dip in the Ganga, offering prayers to the sun, and making donations like sesame seeds, jaggery, and barley.
For the approximately 55-day-long Magh Mela, a separate city has been established on the sandy banks of Sangam. The Uttar Pradesh government is organizing this year’s Magh Mela as a rehearsal for the Kumbh, which will take place after a year. In line with this, not only has the scale of this year’s Magh Mela increased, but several new experiments, including Artificial Intelligence, are also being conducted.
In the Magh Mela, ‘Chakrad Plates’ have been spread in an area of 100 kilometers, and a 200-kilometer pipeline has been laid for water supply. The first bath of the Magh Mela is taking place on Makar Sankranti today, while the second bath will be on the full moon day of Paush (Purnima), which falls on January 25. From this day onwards, the Kalpvas will begin here. The third bathing festival will be on the day of Mauni Amavasya on February 9, followed by the fourth bathing festival on Basant Panchami on February 14, the fifth bathing festival on Maghi Purnima on February 24, and the sixth bathing festival on Mahashivratri on March 8. These are the six main bathing festivals.
