Intense rainfall in central Spain led to the closure of several roads in the Madrid region and the destruction of half a dozen bridges due to overflowing riverbanks.
On Monday morning, a few subway lines in Madrid were closed, along with high-speed train connections to southern cities. Additionally, two individuals were reported missing as a result of the torrential rain in the central region of Spain.
Emergency services were engaged in nearly 1,200 incidents in the region overnight, with firefighters and police searching for the missing individuals in the rural area of Aldea del Fresno, southwest of Madrid, according to Javier Chivite, the spokesperson for the regional emergency services.
Chivite stated, “Two people are missing, a father and his son, they were in a vehicle that got caught in an avalanche caused by the spate of the Alberche river. We hope this will have a positive outcome.”
The heavy rainfall affected several regions, including Madrid, Castile, Catalonia, and Valencia, turning streets into rivers and leading to hail in various areas.
However, the intensity of the rainfall began to subside on Monday morning. While rain continued in most parts of the country, the National Weather Agency lowered the alert level from orange and red, which had been in effect on Sunday, to yellow.
Although some subway lines in central Madrid were closed on Monday morning, a few high-speed train connections between Madrid and the Andalusia region in southern Spain resumed later in the day, albeit with reduced speeds.
