In the Punjab Legislative Assembly during the budget session’s first day on Friday, Congress legislators protested during Governor Banwarilal Purohit’s address, creating a disruption that interfered with the speech. Purohit read out some lines of his speech amidst the chaos and suggested that the remaining portion be considered as read.
Congress raised the farmers’ issue As soon as the governor began his address, Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring raised the issue of farmers and suggested that tributes should be paid to Shubhkarann Singh, who was allegedly killed during clashes between protesting farmers and security personnel from Haryana. Warring stated, “It would be appropriate if the governor pays tribute to the deceased young farmer.”
Remarks to the Governor Leader of the opposition, Pratap Singh Bajwa, remarked that Haryana has sealed its borders with Punjab. He drew the attention of Punjab’s governor to the matter, stating, “You are unable to protect your farmers.” Congress members emphasized that discussions on farmers’ issues should take precedence, to which the governor responded, “I request the opposition leader to understand that there is ample time for discussion on these matters. According to the agenda and tradition, I have to deliver my speech first, and after my speech, you can raise any issue.”
The governor’s message to Congress legislators Purohit stated, “There might be many serious questions, and I agree with that, but this is my time for the speech. Why are you obstructing? This is not appropriate. I request you that this assembly is for debate, and you will have enough time.” The assembly speaker also urged Congress legislators to allow the governor to complete his speech. While condemning the actions of Haryana police against protesting farmers, Punjab Congress legislators also demanded priority in registering cases against Haryana’s Home Minister Anil Vij for alleged atrocities against protesting farmers. In the context of the incident in Khanauri on February 21, where Bhatinda resident Shubhkarann (21) was killed and 12 policemen were injured during clashes between farmers and security personnel, some protesting farmers were allegedly attempting to breach police barricades. Shubhkarann was cremated in his ancestral village in Bhatinda district of Punjab on Thursday.
