Five individuals lost their lives in rain-related incidents in Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Michaung approached Andhra Pradesh, poised for landfall on Tuesday. The cyclone wreaked havoc in Chennai and its environs, unleashing heavy rains that resulted in widespread flooding, extensive damage, and the aforementioned fatalities on Monday. Chennai, a major manufacturing and electronics center, faced severe consequences as floodwaters inundated streets, submerged vehicles, and prompted the shutdown of the bustling airport until Tuesday morning.
The cyclone’s impact also reached the manufacturing facilities of tech giants Foxconn and Pegatron, leading to the suspension of Apple iPhone production due to adverse weather conditions near Chennai, according to Reuters.
Prominent cricketers, many associated with Chennai through the IPL team Chennai Super Kings (CSK), expressed their concern and support for the affected residents on social media.
R Ashwin, a key CSK player, tweeted, “Hang tight for another day everyone. Even if the rain stops, recovery is going to take a while.”
Suresh Raina, another CSK stalwart, posted, “Sending my thoughts and prayers to everyone in #Chennai amidst heavy rains. Gratitude to all those who are working tirelessly to ensure the well-being & safety of the people. Stay strong Everyone.”
Ajinkya Rahane, who played for CSK in the 2023 IPL, wrote, “Wishing for the safety of everyone in Chennai and extending my gratitude to everyone working at ground zero!”
Robin Uthappa wrote, “Sending strength to the people of Chennai. Immense gratitude to the rescue teams, healthcare workers, and volunteers for keeping everyone safe.”
As the city grapples with the aftermath, authorities in Tamil Nadu and neighboring states remain on high alert. Coastal evacuations and warnings for fishermen to avoid the sea have been implemented. The situation prompted the closure of schools, colleges, offices, and banks in at least four districts, including Chennai, for Monday and Tuesday.
