In an article released on Saturday, the state-run Global Times of China criticized the United States, asserting that it is attempting to encircle China by drawing India into its sphere of influence.
Following the fifth 2+2 ministerial dialogue between India and the United States in New Delhi on Friday, the Global Times expressed dissatisfaction with India in its publication on Saturday, accusing the U.S. of attempting to “contain” China by enticing India. The newspaper issued a warning to India, advising it to avoid falling into what it deemed as a trap set by the United States.
Post the India-U.S. meeting, the Global Times advocated for improved relations between China and India, emphasizing that China does not view India as an adversary but as a significant neighboring nation to engage with on an equitable basis. This approach is deemed appropriate for managing differences between the two countries.
The Global Times further stated that as long as the cooperation between India and the U.S. does not impinge on the legitimate rights of any third country, there should be no cause for concern. However, the article highlighted that if such cooperation, particularly in the realms of military and security, poses a threat to the legitimate interests of a third country like China, it would be a matter of serious concern.
The article concluded with a caution that any belief in Washington about persuading and aligning India with the U.S. could lead to destructive outcomes.
The Global Times’ response reflects China’s growing apprehension regarding the deepening ties between India and the United States, especially in areas such as defense, security, and trade. The recent 2+2 dialogue resulted in crucial agreements, including the establishment of a defense industrial cooperation framework and a joint commitment to addressing challenges such as climate change and maritime security.
China’s reaction to the 2+2 dialogue is anticipated to escalate tensions among the three nations, as the United States and India have reaffirmed their dedication to collaboratively addressing challenges posed by China.
