The festival season is in full swing in India, starting from Navratri and continuing with various celebrations. Streets and homes are adorned with lights and vibrant colors, creating a festive atmosphere. Ahoi Ashtami, a significant festival, is just around the corner, and the excitement is building. Each year, Ahoi Ashtami is observed with great enthusiasm all across the country, particularly by married women. On this auspicious day, women observe a fast and offer prayers to Ahoi Mata, seeking blessings for the well-being and longevity of their children. As we prepare to celebrate this occasion, here are some key points to keep in mind.
Ahoi Ashtami is celebrated on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha during the month of Kartik. This year, Ahoi Ashtami falls on November 5. According to Drik Panchang, the Puja Muhurat, or the auspicious time for worship, begins at 5:33 PM and concludes at 6:52 PM on November 5.
According to mythology, there was a couple blessed with seven sons. One day, while the mother was in the forest collecting soil for Diwali decorations, her axe accidentally struck a young cub, causing its death. The grieving mother of the cub placed a curse upon the woman, resulting in the tragic demise of her seven sons. Later, an elderly woman visited their home and advised her to pray to Ahoi Mata. She was instructed to please a cow by feeding it and maintaining its shelter. Following these instructions, the cow was pleased and granted her a boon. Consequently, her seven sons were miraculously revived. Since then, mothers have revered Ahoi Mata to seek blessings for the well-being and prosperity of their children.
Women observe a day-long fast, refraining from food and water from dawn until dusk. They offer prayers to Ahoi Mata, beseeching her for the longevity of their offspring. Upon observing the stars in the evening sky, women conclude their fast and break their vow.
